India has issued a formal demarche to Beijing after Prema Thongdok, a resource regulator from the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, was reportedly harassed by Chinese authorities at Shanghai Pudong Airport on her way back from a conference. The incident occurred after Thongdok, who had travelled abroad and returned to India, was allegedly held and questioned at the airport based on her stated place of origin being Arunachal Pradesh — a region claimed in part by China.
The Indian Embassy in China lodged strong representations with the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, demanding protection of Indian nationals and immediate cessation of questioning on the basis of citizenship or state of origin. Indian officials emphasised that every citizen of India, regardless of their home state, is entitled to consular support and must not face any form of harassment abroad.
Authorities in New Delhi reiterated that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India, and no foreign country has the right to claim jurisdiction over Indian citizens or impose questioning based on disputed territorial assertions. While the incident highlights sensitivities regarding the India-China boundary and border claims, it also raises questions about treatment of Indian nationals abroad.
Beijing has been asked to provide explanations, ensure safe passage of Indian travellers and prevent future occurrences. Meanwhile, India is closely monitoring the situation and standing ready to extend full diplomatic and consular assistance to Thongdok.
The episode comes at a time when India-China relations remain delicate, and external issues involving Indian citizens now carry greater strategic weight.
