As Pakistan prepares to assume the presidency of the UN Security Council (UNSC) in July, India is putting together a strategy to counter its expected focus on Kashmir and cross-border terrorism.
Pakistan is likely to raise the Kashmir issue through open debates and an Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)-UN meeting. In response, India will highlight its economic progress, global investment appeal, and commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will inaugurate a photo exhibition in New York, showcasing the human cost of terrorism. India also plans to actively participate in key UNSC discussions throughout July, including an open debate on international peace and conflict resolution on July 22, and a session on UN-OIC cooperation on July 24.
Additional events will spotlight India’s development milestones and economic success. Suman Bery, Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog, is expected to travel to New York to take part in these programmes.
India will also emphasize its recent achievement of breaking into the top 100 in the UN SDG Index, ranking 99th out of 167 countries with a score of 67.
Through these efforts, India aims to shift the global narrative away from Pakistan’s decades-old Kashmir stance and focus attention on terrorism and development.
