Tensions Off the Field, Fireworks On It: India-Pakistan to Clash in Asia Cup 2025 on September 14
In a much-anticipated showdown, arch-rivals India and Pakistan will face each other in the group stage of the Asia Cup 2025 on September 14, set to be hosted in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The tournament, scheduled from September 9 to 28, will return to the T20 format, with an eye on the T20 World Cup just seven months away.
This high-octane clash comes in the shadow of recent geopolitical tensions. The upcoming encounter will mark the first meeting between the two cricketing giants since the Pahalgam terrorist attack, which killed 26 civilians and was followed by Operation Sindoor, India’s cross-border military response. The tension spilled into sports diplomacy, affecting even the women’s tournament last month, where the BCCI withdrew from the Women’s Asia Cup for emerging players citing national sentiment.
Despite the strained relations, cricketing ties have been preserved under the umbrella of multi-nation events. A senior official from India’s Sports Ministry clarified that the government would not intervene in India’s participation against Pakistan in such tournaments.
Asia Cup Confirmed in UAE, Despite Political Drama
While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is the official host, the matches will be played on neutral territory in the UAE. The decision to shift the tournament from South Asia came after BCCI strongly opposed holding the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) annual meeting in Dhaka, warning other boards against attending. Eventually, a compromise was reached, and the schedule was finalized via virtual conferencing.
ACC President and PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi confirmed the venue and dates, posting on X:
“I am delighted to confirm the dates for the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE. The prestigious tournament will take place from September 9th to 28th. We look forward to a spectacular display of cricket!”
Naqvi emphasized that hosting the tournament in a neutral setting reflects the cultural diversity of the region and the unifying power of sport.
Eight Teams, One Goal
This year’s Asia Cup will feature eight teams:

Sri Lanka
Bangladesh
Afghanistan
Hong Kong
UAE
Oman
The format is designed to simulate World Cup conditions, giving teams crucial match practice. If both India and Pakistan progress from Group A to the Super 4s and continue their winning ways, they could meet again in the final — a scenario fans and broadcasters alike are eager for.
Backdrop: A History of Disruptions
This is not the first time political friction has shaped the tournament. In the 2023 Asia Cup, hosted by Pakistan, India refused to travel across the border, forcing organizers to split venues and play India’s matches in Sri Lanka. The move backfired for Pakistan, as they were knocked out before the final, which saw India crushing Sri Lanka to lift the title.
With preparations now underway in the UAE, all eyes are once again on the India-Pakistan rivalry — a spectacle that transcends sport, yet always draws millions to their screens.
