This phase of geopolitics, India stands on a stiff tightrope, without any dull day passing by, everyday somewhere its mention and test to its diplomatic ties. Taking instances from the recent UN General Assembly (UNGA) and its sidelines, India found itself both praised and blamed. When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described India as an ally with the claims “mostly with us” on the Ukraine conflict, however hinting at a growing Russian energy dependency. Whereas a few hours after this, U.S. President Donald Trump addressed UNGA to accuse India and China of being a “primary funder” of Russia’s war machine by buying that very oil.
Notably, both the leaders used the same global stage to highlight how India’s policy of strategic autonomy is becoming both its greatest strength and its biggest diplomatic test. By bringing up India’s Energy security into a worldwide discussion, the path taken by Trump to bring up on how a commercial necessity into a moral and political flashpoint.
Since Independence India’s foreign policy followed a traditional route of non-alignment which kept it safe from all sorts of contemporary global power shifts. However, now it is getting rebranded as “multi-alignment” which more often gets diffi cult in maintaining a cordial trade and defence relationship across rival blocs.
A prime example of which can be taken as how India has deep defense ties with the United States while it still purchases arms and energy from Russia.
Therefore, Zelensky’s praise actually rewards India for keeping communication channels open in every possible round, which also reflects its balancing act.
At the pedestal of claiming global dominance, India is facing all sorts of growing scrutiny through unjust tariffs threats for Russian purchases and risking energy shocks or to facing unreasonably high visa rates in order to stay at the course and otherwise risk reputational damage and above all trade frictions.
Therefore it won’t be just an underlining that India as a country is now too important for anyone to ignore, yet too independent and sovereign to get easily swayed by any threat or treat.
It will be interesting to witness the flipside of whether India’s strategic diplomacy and super cautious engagement can outlast the ever-growing global pressure and how this building force will shape India’s own role as a pivotal power in a fractured world.
