India-Nepal ties received a fresh boost as External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Nepal Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal held wide-ranging talks in New Delhi, focusing on border security, connectivity, economic cooperation and development partnerships.
During the discussions, both sides reviewed bilateral relations across trade, energy, investment, education, disaster response and cultural cooperation. Dr. Jaishankar highlighted that India and Nepal work closely to maintain security along their uniquely open border and have consistently supported each other during times of need. He described the relationship as a special partnership built on strong people-to-people links, cross-border connectivity and shared cultural traditions.
The meeting comes at an important time following Nepal’s recent political transition. Khanal called for a “genuinely transformative” relationship with India driven by economic growth and result-oriented diplomacy. He also stressed that Nepal carries “no old baggage” and is committed to strengthening ties with its closest neighbour and key partner.
Beyond diplomacy, the visit produced several tangible outcomes. India handed over 72 health facilities and 12 cultural heritage projects completed under Nepal’s post-2015 earthquake reconstruction programme. The two countries also launched a cross-border payments linkage connecting India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Nepal’s National Payments Interface, making personal remittances easier between the two nations. Additionally, a new agreement was signed between Digital India Bhashini and Kathmandu University to help develop a voice-first language translation platform for Nepal.
The renewed focus on India-Nepal ties signals an effort by both governments to expand cooperation in infrastructure, technology, energy and border management while building on their longstanding cultural and civilisational relationship. The developments are also being viewed as a sign of growing momentum in bilateral engagement under Nepal’s new leadership.
