New Delhi has formally invited Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, to visit the country for bilateral discussions with PM Narendra Modi, signalling fresh momentum in the two nations’ effort to repair relations after a diplomatic lull.
The invitation comes as both nations look to reboot major trade-and-investment talks, potentially unlocking annual bilateral trade well above the current figure of about US$23.6 billion. Key sectors of interest include energy, agriculture, batteries, critical minerals and AI.
Diplomatic relations had cooled sharply following accusations by the Canadian government of Indian involvement in the killing of a Sikh separatist in 2023. India denied the allegations and both countries scaled back engagement.
India’s new High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Kumar Patnaik, described the current period as one of “sincere effort” to restore trust and cited the invitation as a signal of intent from New Delhi.
Should the talks proceed, analysts say India-Canada trade ties may gain fresh traction amid broader global realignments. But observers caution that lasting progress will require resolution of underlying security and diplomatic issues alongside economic engagement.
