India and the European Union will hold a workshop in New Delhi on December 5 to discuss cooperation on protecting critical submarine infrastructure. The event focuses on India EU undersea cables security and will bring together participants from key Indian Ocean countries located near strategic cable routes. Officials said the discussions aim to map risks, share practices and develop policy solutions for regional maritime security.
Around seventy participants from India, the EU and Indian Ocean nations, including military personnel and officials from agencies such as the navy and coast guard, are expected to attend. They will examine ways to safeguard undersea cables that carry most international data traffic and support global commerce. Representatives said cables are vulnerable to ocean conditions, accidental damage and intentional sabotage, making protection a priority.
The seminar is part of a broader maritime cooperation effort linked to the Indo-Pacific, with the goal of strengthening infrastructure security through coordinated responses and technical exchanges. The EU said the exercise will review regional risks and highlight the need for reliable networks that support economic activity and digital connectivity.
The workshop is being organised by India’s National Maritime Foundation with support from an EU security and defence project focused on marine cooperation. Officials noted that the EU Action Plan on Cable Security provides a framework for strengthening undersea cable resilience and can support future joint strategies with international partners such as India.
Indian maritime experts said the meeting reflects growing attention on cable routes across the Indian Ocean, adding that collaboration on India EU undersea cables will deepen strategic dialogue on maritime safety and infrastructure protection. The session marks a step forward in maritime engagement between India and Europe, with officials expecting further progress through ongoing security dialogues.
