Bangladesh’s interim chief adviser, Muhammad Yunus, has publicly criticized India for backing and hosting former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, saying it has added friction to diplomatic relations between Dhaka and New Delhi.
On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Yunus claimed that India disapproved of last year’s student-led protests in Bangladesh, which led to Hasina’s removal, and accused New Delhi of spreading “fake news” about the unrest.
He also linked India’s decision to host Hasina to the current diplomatic strain, warning it deepens political tensions.
This public discourse underscores a shifting phase in Bangladesh–India relations, one where domestic politics in Dhaka are increasingly intersecting with regional diplomacy.
