India and UK deepen strategic ties despite FTA delay, unveiling new initiatives in critical minerals, maritime security and economic cooperation even as implementation of their recently signed free trade agreement faces a possible delay.
During a visit to India by UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and discussions involving senior ministers from both countries, New Delhi and London reaffirmed their commitment to the broader India-UK Vision 2035 roadmap. The talks focused on strengthening cooperation across trade, technology, supply chains, defence, clean energy and education.
One of the key outcomes was the launch of the India-UK Critical Minerals Global Supply Chain Observatory, a new platform aimed at improving supply chain intelligence and cooperation in securing minerals essential for clean energy technologies, electric mobility and advanced manufacturing. Both sides described critical minerals as increasingly important for economic security and future industrial growth.
The two countries also announced new maritime security initiatives, including the establishment of a Regional Maritime Security Centre of Excellence. The initiative is expected to help strengthen cooperation in the Indian Ocean region and enhance capacity to address emerging maritime security challenges.
While strategic cooperation expanded, uncertainty remains over the timeline for implementing the India-UK Free Trade Agreement. UK Trade Secretary Peter Kyle indicated that the agreement itself would not be reopened, but suggested implementation could take longer than initially expected due to ongoing concerns surrounding British steel trade measures. Indian officials have raised objections to some of the proposed measures and continue discussions with their British counterparts.
India and UK deepen strategic ties despite FTA delay as both countries seek to build a broader partnership extending beyond trade into technology, security, supply chains and critical resources. The developments underline the growing importance of the India-UK relationship at a time of increasing global economic and geopolitical uncertainty.
