Today’s world is divided by political calculations. Recently Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Corina Machado has called India a “Beacon of Democracy,” further urging the world’s largest democracy to support Venezuela’s struggle for freedom from authoritarian rule.
Maria Corina Machado is Venezuela’s opposition leader and was in hiding after facing persecution under President Nicolás Maduro’s regime, Machado said India’s democratic journey offers hope to millions seeking fair elections and civil rights.
Highlighting India’s growing global stature and its potential to help rebuild Venezuela’s fractured economy particularly in energy, infrastructure, and telecom. She further invoked the real spirit of peaceful resistance as the strongest weapon against tyranny, remembering Mahatma Gandhi and urged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to support Venezuela’s transition to democracy through diplomatic and economic
collaboration.
Venezuela is currently under political crisis with international isolation and questions around electoral legitimacy, amidst this Machado’s efforts to build a partnership with India, not just reflects the hope but also the aspiration around being India’s growing global relevance and voice for those who dream of freedom and believe in democracy. As global attention turns toward Venezuela’s uncertain future. Machado’s outreach to India symbolizes more than a diplomatic gesture, it’s a call for moral partnership in defending democracy itself. India’s own rise as a voice for peace and pluralism lends credibility to that appeal. If heeded, this moment could mark the beginning of a new alliance between two nations bound by shared ideals rather than convenience.
For India, it is undeniably an opportunity to translate its democratic legacy into active global leadership. And for Venezuela, it’s a reminder that even in exile and adversity, the language of freedom still finds resonance in the world’s largest democracy. Together, both the countries can embody the enduring belief that liberty that once awakened, can never truly be silenced.
