A tragic accident in Chicago claimed the life of 23-year-old Srija Varma, originally from Hyderabad. On the evening of August 11, she was walking to a nearby restaurant for dinner from her apartment when a speeding truck struck her from behind. The crash caused multiple grievous injuries, and she was declared dead at the scene.
Srija, who had completed her Master’s degree in the U.S., was pursuing her studies and planning to enter the workforce. Her family—father Srinivas Varma and mother Hemalatha—reside in Medchal-Malkajgiri district’s Gandi Maisamma area. Her younger sister had recently joined her in the U.S. for higher education.
The bereaved family has reached out to various Telugu cultural associations in the U.S., requesting assistance to expedite repatriation of Srija’s mortal remains to India for her final rites.
This incident has heightened concerns within the Indian diaspora about pedestrian safety and reckless driving. It follows another road-related tragedy involving a Hyderabad family in the U.S., underscoring ongoing road safety risks.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident. Meanwhile, Srija’s untimely death has left her community in sorrow and raised calls for increased caution on roads both abroad and at home.
