The main signboard of the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Greenwood, Indiana, was defaced in a hateful act on Tuesday, prompting strong condemnation from the Indian Consulate in Chicago. The consulate called the desecration “reprehensible” and has raised the matter with local law enforcement, urging swift action.
This is the fourth such incident targeting a BAPS temple in the U.S. within a year, according to the temple’s public affairs account. In response, the Consul General spoke to community members and local leaders, including the Mayor of Greenwood, calling for unity, solidarity, and vigilance against hateful acts. The temple administration said the incident only strengthened the community’s resolve and commitment to standing against anti-religious behavior.
These repeated attacks reflect a pattern of vandalism against Hindu places of worship in America, raising concern over rising hate crimes. The Indian community and temple authorities are calling for enhanced security and greater vigilance to ensure places of worship remain safe havens for all.
