A 22-year-old Indian national wanted for murder in India was arrested on November 16 by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Port of Buffalo’s Peace Bridge border crossing after being denied entry into Canada.
The man, identified as Vishat Kumar, entered the United States illegally in 2024 and failed to attend an asylum interview. During a secondary inspection, biometric technology revealed that he had used a false identity. CBP confirmed that he is subject to an Interpol Red Notice by Indian authorities in connection with a murder case in India.
Following his arrest, Kumar was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement/Enforcement Removal Operations (ICE/ERO) officers and is currently held at the Federal Detention Facility in Batavia, New York, while removal proceedings are underway.
The case highlights the growing cooperation between Indian law-enforcement agencies and their international partners in tracking fugitives abroad. It also underscores the challenges posed by illegal migration channels, identity falsification and cross-border movement in fugitive cases with Indian links.
