An Indian student’s heartfelt social media post has gone viral for exposing the emotional, financial, and social struggles faced by thousands of international students chasing dreams abroad.
Prathamesh Patil, an Indian student currently living in Germany, took to Instagram to share the unfiltered truth behind the glamorous façade of life overseas. In his now-viral post, Patil wrote about the sacrifices, loneliness, and resilience that define the immigrant student experience — a journey often glossed over on social media.
“The peak of happiness is crying, and the peak of sadness is laughing — whoever said that was absolutely right,” he wrote, recounting how he broke down only when his mother told him, ‘In the end, hard work always pays off, my child.’
Patil revealed that he had endured months of struggle without shedding a tear — from leaving his home country and quitting his job to navigating extreme living conditions — until that emotional conversation with his mother finally broke his composure.
From Dreams to Daily Survival
In the video montage accompanying his caption, Patil chronicled his journey – from landing in Germany with “four suitcases and big dreams” to facing the harsh realities of student life abroad. He described living in a cramped flat shared by nine people with only one washroom, and working several part-time jobs just to make ends meet.
“I cleaned restaurant kitchens and toilets for eight euros an hour,” he shared. “I delivered groceries in the freezing cold and worked in warehouses and supermarkets where payments were often delayed or incomplete.”
His struggles didn’t end there. Patil also revealed he was scammed by a landlord, lost a significant amount of money, and even found himself temporarily homeless before finally securing a residence permit after two long years.
Despite applying to more than 300 internships and facing rejection after rejection, he refused to give up. When he finally received an acceptance letter, he said the joy was overwhelming — not just for him, but for his parents who had supported him from afar.
“That moment – when I told my parents I got an offer – I just couldn’t hold back my tears,” he wrote.

Patil said his story was not unique, but rather a reflection of what countless international students endure in pursuit of a better future.
“People see the good moments online and think we’re living the dream life,” he said. “But nothing comes for free — every dream has a price.”
He concluded his post by thanking friends who stood by him through the darkest phases of his journey. “This is just the beginning,” he added, noting that what might seem like a small milestone to some was an unimaginable achievement for his 18-year-old self.
