Gujarat Police have recovered ₹11 lakh for a Sydney-based Non-Resident Indian (NRI) who was allegedly duped in an online gold purchase scam, highlighting the growing effectiveness of cyber crime investigations in cross-border fraud cases. The recovery was made within weeks of the victim filing a complaint via email with the Amreli Cyber Crime Police.
According to police, the complainant, identified as Saurabh Jolly, had transferred ₹11 lakh in April to a person based in Gujarat’s Amreli district to purchase gold. However, the bullion was never delivered, prompting him to approach the police from Sydney in June. Acting swiftly, the cyber crime team launched an investigation, coordinated with the concerned bank and traced the money trail.
Amreli Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kharat said the investigators remained in constant touch with the complainant throughout the probe and assured him of full support. Inspector Kamlesh Khatana of the Amreli Cyber Crime Police said the recipient was directed to return the money after the investigation established the facts, leading to the complete recovery of the amount. The funds were subsequently credited back to the victim’s account earlier this month.
In a letter to the Amreli Police, Jolly thanked the cyber crime team for their professionalism and efficiency. He said that despite being in Australia, he never expected the matter to be resolved so quickly. The case underscores the increasing capability of Indian law enforcement agencies to investigate cyber fraud complaints filed by Indians living overseas and recover lost funds through coordinated action with financial institutions.
