A family from Gujarat was allegedly kidnapped in Libya while attempting to travel to Portugal, according to police officials familiar with the case. The couple and their three-year-old child were taken hostage by a local group that demanded a ransom of Rs 27 lakh for their release.
Police stated that the family had left for Libya in November with the help of an agent who had arranged their travel to Portugal, where they intended to settle. Upon reaching Libya, however, their movement was intercepted, and they were held hostage in the North African nation.
According to Mehsana police, the abductors contacted relatives in India and demanded the ransom, warning that the family would not be released until the payment was made. The relatives then approached police, who have since opened an investigation. Officials said the family is believed to have been kidnapped from Badalpura village and transported to an unknown location.
Local authorities confirmed that assistance has been sought from central agencies and the Ministry of External Affairs. Police are also examining the suspected role of the agent who facilitated the family’s travel, as cases involving illegal migration routes to Europe through African countries have risen sharply in recent years.
Officers stated that they are coordinating with national and international counterparts to trace the family and secure their safe return. While no specific update on their condition has been released, police said efforts are underway to verify their location and the credibility of the ransom threat.
The case has once again highlighted the dangers faced by migrants who attempt irregular travel routes in pursuit of settlement abroad, particularly through regions affected by conflict or political instability.
