Germany scraps transit visa requirement for Indians in a move expected to make international travel easier for thousands of Indian passengers transiting through German airports on their way to destinations across Europe, North America and other regions.
Under the new policy, Indian nationals will no longer require an airport transit visa when travelling to a third country through a German airport. The change came into effect on June 3, 2026, following its publication in Germany’s Federal Law Gazette. The German Embassy in New Delhi said the decision reflects Berlin’s commitment to strengthening ties with India and facilitating greater mobility between the two countries.
The move is expected to benefit a wide range of Indian travellers, including students, professionals, tourists and business travellers who frequently use major German aviation hubs such as Frankfurt and Munich for international connections. Previously, certain categories of Indian travellers were required to obtain a transit visa even when they remained within the airport’s international transit area.
German officials said the decision would help simplify travel procedures while supporting the movement of people and strengthening economic and people-to-people links. The embassy described the change as part of broader efforts to deepen Germany-India relations.
The development follows a similar move by France earlier this year. In April, France operationalised visa-free airport transit for Indian nationals travelling through mainland French airports. Indian officials welcomed that decision as another step forward in bilateral cooperation and travel facilitation.
The latest announcement comes amid growing strategic engagement between India and European countries in areas ranging from trade and investment to technology, education and skilled mobility. Germany has emerged as an important destination for Indian students and professionals, particularly in engineering, manufacturing and technology sectors.
Travel industry observers say the removal of transit visa requirements could reduce paperwork, lower travel costs and provide greater flexibility when booking international flights routed through Germany.
