VOI World India’s medical students are increasingly choosing Georgia as a destination for higher education, driven by disruptions in Ukraine and rising remittances to the Eurasian country. Data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) show that Indian remittances for education in Georgia climbed to $50.25 million in FY 2024-25, nearly five times higher than the $10.33 million recorded in 2018-19. In contrast, Ukraine, once a major draw, saw remittances fall sharply from $14.80 million in 2018-19 to just $2.40 million in FY 2024-25, underscoring the war’s lasting impact on the education corridor. Georgia’s ranking among destinations for Indian students has advanced from 21st in 2018-19 to 12th by 2023-24.
According to foreign-education consultants, Georgia offers cost-effective medical courses, favourable residency laws and proximity to Europe — attributes appealing to Indian students seeking alternatives to traditional destinations. At the same time, the evolving landscape signals broader shifts in global education mobility and choice for students from India.
For India, this trend highlights changing patterns in outward student movement, diversifying destinations beyond the usual set and reflecting how geopolitical risks can reshape education decisions. As the country positions itself under Indian PM Modi’s global-talent and diaspora framework, monitoring how these new mobility streams evolve will be important.
