From Tariffs to Ties: How India Navigates Trump’s Second Term

Donald Trump’s return to the White House has sent shock waves globally even across the corridors of New Delhi. For decades, India has cultivated strategic partnership with the US, while maintaining its sovereignty. Trump’s second term, however, threatens to complicate that balancing act.

This is a stress test for India with elevated tariffs, transactional diplomacy, and renewed pressure over Russian energy and defense ties. If not tackled strategically this could strain New Delhi’s external maneuvering.

Standing firm on a balanced ground, India is building bridges with major regional players to safeguard stability and interests through diplomacy and calculated assertion of sovereignty.

India is leveraging its position in Asia through a calibrated pivot. Turning the challenging situation into an opportunity to diversify trade and strengthen domestic manufacturing. Along with seeking new markets in ASEAN, Africa and Latin America, to reinforce its role as a global manufacturing hub.

India is actively sculpting an Asia strategy through engagement with Russia for energy and defence stability, cautious dialogue with China to explore cooperation and maintain peace at the LAC, and strengthening its partnership with Japan as a counterbalance in the Indo-Pacific. Meanwhile, Forums such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) provide India space to engage with Asian global powers selectively, as a strategic necessity. Trump 2.0 may put the world through tests, but India remains in control.

By engaging in practices that preserve its autonomy, expanding trade map and implementing policies to safeguards its economy, while strengthening ties and putting up dialogue to enhance its global clout.
