Tesla and SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk has spoken about a personal connection to India, revealing that his partner Shivon Zilis is half-Indian and that one of their twin sons carries the middle name “Shekhar” in honour of Nobel Prize–winning astrophysicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar.
Musk made the remarks during an appearance on Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath’s podcast WTF is?, where he discussed a mix of personal stories and professional insights. During the conversation, Musk said, “I don’t know if you know this, but my partner Shivon is half-Indian. And one of our kids’ middle name is Sekhar after Chandrasekhar,” referring to the celebrated Indian-American physicist known for the Chandrasekhar limit in astrophysics.

Zilis’ Indian Roots, Canadian Upbringing
Kamath also asked Musk whether Zilis had ever lived in India. Musk clarified that while she has ancestral ties to the country, she grew up in Canada. He noted that Zilis was adopted at a young age and that her father had been a foreign student, although Musk admitted he did not know all the details of her family history.
Musk’s comments sparked interest on social media, with many users highlighting his repeated engagements with India and Indian-origin talent across his companies.
