National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reviewed bilateral ties and noted progress towards the gradual normalisation of relations during a meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS National Security Advisers’ gathering in New Delhi.
The discussions focused on recent developments in India-China relations and efforts to restore stability after the prolonged military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), which had strained ties for more than four years. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the talks were “constructive and forward-looking” and highlighted progress in rebuilding trust between the two countries.
Doval stressed the importance of stable, predictable and constructive bilateral relations in promoting greater understanding between India and China. The meeting marked Wang Yi’s first visit to India in nearly a year and comes as both countries continue implementing steps agreed upon after reaching an understanding in October 2024 to end the border impasse.
The BRICS NSA meeting, which brings together national security advisers from the bloc’s 11 member states, is part of preparations for the BRICS Summit to be hosted by India later this year. Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong said the two sides would also exchange views on major international and regional security challenges.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Doval also held talks with Iran’s Deputy Secretary of Defence Affairs Ghadir Nezampour, marking the first high-level contact between New Delhi and Tehran since the recent US-Iran de-escalation understanding. The two sides discussed the evolving situation in West Asia and cooperation under both the BRICS framework and bilateral relations.
India and China have taken several steps towards restoring ties since the October 2024 understanding ended the long-running border standoff. Officials from both countries have described the process as one of gradual normalisation, though significant challenges remain.
