In a significant development, the death sentence of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya has reportedly been cancelled by Yemeni authorities. The announcement was made by the office of Indian Grand Mufti Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliyar, citing a high-level meeting held in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.
Nimisha Priya, a 37-year-old nurse from Kerala, was convicted of murdering her former business partner in Yemen and was scheduled to be executed on July 16. However, following diplomatic intervention by the Indian government, the execution was temporarily suspended on July 15. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had requested more time for her family to negotiate a settlement with the victim’s family.
According to the Grand Mufti’s office, the recent meeting in Sanaa led to a decision to completely cancel the death sentence, which had earlier been placed on hold. While there is yet to be official confirmation from Yemeni authorities, the statement has brought hope to Priya’s family and supporters.
On July 17, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed the Indian government’s continued efforts to support Nimisha Priya. He also stated that a lawyer had been appointed to help her family with legal proceedings in Yemen.
The cancellation of the death sentence marks a potential turning point in the high-profile case, which has drawn widespread attention and concern in India.
