A devastating cloudburst over the Kheer Ganga river in Uttarkashi’s Dharali village on August 5 has triggered massive flash floods, leaving at least four people dead and over 100 missing. Entire structures – including homes, hotels, and a local temple – were swept away in the deluge as water surged through the area.
Rescue operations are in full swing with over 150 personnel from the Army, ITBP, SDRF, and NDRF deployed on the ground. So far, around 20 people have been rescued and 130 evacuated to safer zones. However, blocked roads and damaged bridges are hampering efforts to reach cut-off areas. Sniffer dogs and heavy machinery are being used to locate those trapped under debris.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami conducted an aerial survey and assured continued efforts to restore normalcy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also been briefed and extended central support.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the region, warning of continued heavy rainfall through August 10. Experts warn that the disaster underscores the increasing frequency of extreme weather events in Uttarakhand, worsened by climate change and unchecked development in ecologically sensitive zones.
As search efforts continue, families wait anxiously for news of their missing loved ones. Authorities are urging people in affected regions to remain on high alert.
