A massive cloudburst struck Chashoti village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district on August 14, triggering devastating flash floods along the Machail Mata Yatra route. The sudden deluge resulted in at least 46 fatalities, including two CISF personnel, while over 100 individuals were injured and more than 200 are reported missing. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations progress.
Rescue teams comprising the NDRF, SDRF, Indian Army, police, and local volunteers have deployed choppers, ambulances, and medical aid to the remote, mountainous area. Over 160 people have been rescued so far, with many in critical condition.
The Machail Mata pilgrimage has been suspended following the disaster. Authorities, including J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, cancelled Independence Day cultural events in light of the tragedy and are overseeing relief measures. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and pledged full assistance.
Chashoti’s remote terrain and fragile ecosystem have made rescue operations challenging. Experts have warned that climate change and unchecked development in the Himalayan region are increasing the frequency and impact of such disasters.
