China Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit India next week to attend a meeting of national security advisers of BRICS member countries, marking his first trip to the country in nearly a year and signalling continued efforts by New Delhi and Beijing to stabilise ties.
The two-day meeting, scheduled for June 22-23, will be hosted by India as preparations continue for the BRICS Summit later this year. Wang, who also serves as China’s top diplomatic official, is expected to hold discussions with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and other BRICS leaders on international and regional security issues.
The visit comes amid a gradual improvement in India-China relations after both sides reached an understanding in October 2024 to ease tensions along the Line of Actual Control. Since then, the two countries have taken steps to rebuild confidence, including resuming direct flights, reviving the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and easing some visa restrictions.
Chinese officials said BRICS countries would discuss responses to conventional and non-conventional security challenges and preparations for the summit that India will host in September.
Sources said Wang may also meet external affairs minister S Jaishankar and could call on Indian PM Modi during his visit. Chinese President Xi Jinping is also expected to attend the BRICS Summit later this year.
The visit reflects a slow but steady effort by Asia’s two largest economies to normalise relations after years of border tensions and diplomatic strain.
