The Canadian government has introduced stricter rules for canceling visas, impacting international students, foreign workers and visitors. Under the updated guidelines, immigration officers now have broader authority to rescind previously issued visas and study permits if recipients fail to comply with conditions or post-arrival obligations.
This move follows other recent changes including a sharp drop in approvals for students from India—about 74% of Indian study-permit applications were rejected in August 2025 compared to 32% in August 2023. The authorities attribute many of these shifts to concerns over fraud, misuse of study permits and housing-market pressure.
For Indian applicants and those leveraging Canada for education or work, the implications are significant. Program-specific eligibility is tighter, financial requirements have increased, and the risk of visa cancellation has grown. Educational institutions and recruiters dependent on international student inflow could face disruption.
While Canada insists the policy is not anti-immigration, but aimed at ensuring “sustainable” intake, the momentum may make Canada less accessible for Indian students and temporary skilled workers aiming for global mobility. The changing landscape demands tighter compliance and clearer intentions for those looking to study or work across borders.
