California has declared Diwali an official state holiday, becoming the third U.S. state to do so after New York and New Jersey. The motion passed unanimously in the state’s legislature, granting public employees the day off to celebrate the festival of lights.
The recognition reflects the growing strength and influence of the Indian diaspora in the U.S., especially in California, which hosts one of the largest Indian-American communities in the country. Lawmakers cited the importance of cultural representation and inclusion as key reasons for the decision.
With this move, government offices, schools, and public services in California will remain closed on Diwali. Advocates say it affirms the significance of Indian culture in the American social fabric and offers recognition to a festival celebrated by millions worldwide.
