Despite the tariff tensions and uncertainties around trade laws, India-US bilateral relations maintained a balanced approach towards defence cooperation. During the multilateral event ASEAN/ADMM-Plus in Malaysia, India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will meet US counterpart Pete Hegseth.
This meeting is not just a resilient show of strategic diplomatic framework between the two but also a show of long term security, technical, intelligence and maritime cooperation.
India’s fi rm stance upon building a roadmap for future joint exercises, intelligence sharing, logistics support arrangements, defence industrial cooperation, and possible technology transfers or co-production deals (e.g., aircraft, maritime systems). This also indicates that amidst the tariff turmoil by the USA, these agreements keep up the pace of political waves and might result in smoother trade flow.
However, both the countries have not yet released any specifi c announcement. But the scheduled meeting with India and Canada’s outreach,will leave the US compartmentalised and also to rewire its strategy and mind not ruin the relations built on economic and strategic needs.
For India, this meeting and the proposed 10- year defence framework is more than symbolism while for the U.S. it’s a reminder that partnerships matter more than politics . American technical support, India’s strategic training, along with naval interoperability over the Pacifi c, together they can become a force to reckon with.
In an era when diplomacy swings between cold wars and cold calls, the India-U.S. story is learning to multitask, disagreeing in trade and visas, but aligning in defence and security. The meeting in Malaysia is a highlight moment, a strategic whisper that could overshadow any declarations.
On the neutral ground of Kuala Lumpur, the oldest and the largest democracies of the world will quietly reaffi rm that tariffs may rise, but trust must not fall along with military cooperation. It was a quiet assertion that India’s foreign policy now plays on multiple tracks, without losing balance on any.
