Bangladesh Court Grants Chinmoy Das Bail in two more cases, but the jailed Hindu leader will remain in custody as legal proceedings against him continue in other cases.
The Bangladesh High Court granted bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, also known as Chandan Kumar Dhar, in two cases involving allegations of vandalism and obstructing police duties. The cases were filed at Kotwali Police Station in Chattogram in November 2024.
The latest order means Das has now secured bail in four of the six criminal cases filed against him, according to his lawyer. However, he cannot yet be released because he remains under arrest in other cases.
Das has been in jail since November 25, 2024, following his arrest in a sedition case. His bail in that case was previously granted by the High Court but remains stayed by Bangladesh’s Appellate Division.
He also faces proceedings in connection with the killing of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif during violence in Chattogram in November 2024. The case is continuing before a tribunal. Das’s bail in other cases does not determine his guilt or innocence in any of the allegations against him.
The latest Bangladesh Court Grants Chinmoy Das Bail order is therefore a significant legal development, but it does not immediately change his status in custody.
The case has drawn attention in India, particularly because Das is a prominent Hindu religious figure in Bangladesh and his arrest had triggered concerns and protests over the treatment of Hindus in the country.
