Australian NRI Murder Case investigators continue to search for crucial evidence after a court in Amritsar sent three accused to judicial custody in the alleged murder of Australia-based NRI Sunil Sharma.
The accused — Satish Sharma, the victim’s brother, nephew Sunish Sharma and property dealer Lachhman Singh — were produced before the court after the expiry of their police remand. A day earlier, Satish Sharma’s wife, Anushka Sharma, had also been sent to judicial custody.
The case has drawn widespread attention after Punjab Police alleged that Sunil Sharma, a 66-year-old Australian citizen of Punjabi origin, was murdered as part of a conspiracy linked to a property dispute. Investigators claim the victim had travelled to Punjab to deal with family property matters when he went missing under suspicious circumstances. Police later arrested multiple family members and associates, alleging they were involved in the plot.
Authorities are continuing efforts to recover Sharma’s body, which investigators believe was disposed of in the Harike Pattan area after the killing. Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Punjab Police and forensic experts have been conducting searches along canal stretches and nearby locations while collecting additional evidence.
The case has also triggered emotional reactions from the victim’s family in Australia. Earlier this week, Sharma’s daughter publicly demanded the harshest punishment for the accused, alleging that her father was betrayed by those closest to him in a calculated attempt to seize property.
With the accused now in judicial custody, investigators are expected to focus on recovering the body, tracing the sequence of events leading to the murder and strengthening the evidence that will form the basis of the prosecution’s case.
