Australia has strengthened its engagement with India by opening its new Consulate-General in Bengaluru while the University of New South Wales (UNSW) officially launched its India campus in the city, marking a significant step in expanding bilateral cooperation across education, technology and innovation.
The new diplomatic mission reflects Australia’s growing focus on Bengaluru, India’s technology and startup hub, and is expected to deepen collaboration in areas such as research, critical technologies, clean energy, digital innovation and business partnerships.
Coinciding with the opening, UNSW became one of the first Australian universities to establish a physical campus in India under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 framework. The campus aims to strengthen academic collaboration, research partnerships and student mobility between the two countries.
Australian officials said the twin developments demonstrate the country’s long-term commitment to India as a strategic partner. Bengaluru has emerged as a key destination for Australian investment, technology companies and higher education institutions seeking closer engagement with India’s innovation ecosystem.
The move also comes amid expanding India-Australia cooperation under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with both countries increasing collaboration in trade, education, defence, critical minerals and emerging technologies.
The new consulate is expected to support Australian businesses, students and citizens in southern India while facilitating stronger commercial, academic and people-to-people ties between the two nations.
