Australian winger Ryan Williams, whose mother hails from Mumbai, has formally renounced his Australian citizenship in a bid to represent India at the international level. Williams, who joined Bengaluru FC in 2023, said the decision was driven by both a desire to reconnect with his Indian roots and to follow through on his ambition of playing for the Indian national football team.
The 31-year-old winger, who holds an Anglo-Indian heritage, reportedly initiated the application process for Indian citizenship this week—since India does not permit dual passports. Upon receiving approval, he will become eligible for selection by All India Football Federation (AIFF) and could feature for the Blue Tigers in upcoming Asian Cup qualifiers.
Williams’ shift underlines a growing trend of diasporic athletes representing India, and adds momentum to the country’s ambitions in football. His move is being seen as a statement both of cultural identity and sporting intent—not just about club success in the Indian Super League but about national representation.
