Apple has named Amar Subramanya, a well-known Indian-origin AI researcher, as its new vice president of AI. He replaces John Giannandrea, who will transition into an advisory role before retiring in early 2026.
Subramanya will report to Craig Federighi and lead major verticals, including Apple Foundation Models, machine learning research, and AI safety and evaluation. The company said his expertise will be key to strengthening Apple’s long-term AI strategy, especially as it works to roll out more personalised Siri features next year.
Apple CEO Tim Cook said Subramanya brings deep technical leadership and will play a crucial role in driving the company’s next phase of AI development. Cook also thanked Giannandrea for shaping Apple’s AI efforts since joining the company in 2018.
The organisational shift will see Sabih Khan and Eddy Cue’s teams work more closely with the AI division to support Apple’s broader product roadmap. Industry observers note that Apple has been viewed as lagging behind rivals such as Samsung and Google in launching visible AI features, making this leadership change a significant step in its effort to accelerate development.
Subramanya, who previously held senior AI roles at Meta and Google, is expected to help Apple fast-track internal model research, expand safety frameworks, and strengthen its competitive standing in generative AI.
