India has officially been awarded hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad chosen as the venue following approval from delegates at the General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport in Glasgow. The decision marks India’s return as a Games host after a gap of 20 years — the last time the event was held in the country was in Delhi in 2010.

The 2030 edition will also be the Games’ centenary celebration, giving Ahmedabad the honour of marking 100 years of the Commonwealth sporting tradition. The event is expected to feature 15–17 sports disciplines, while the final programme will be confirmed in 2026.

Indian officials and sports authorities responded with optimism. The government described the win as a “prestigious moment for Indian sports,” underscoring the country’s ambition to emerge as a global hub for major sporting events.

The selection comes as Ahmedabad and its surrounding region undergo major infrastructure upgrades — from sports facilities and stadiums to transport, hospitality and athlete-ready amenities — positioning the city not just as a host, but as a potential contender for the 2036 Summer Olympics.

The 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad represents a significant milestone in India’s sporting journey — combining scale, youth potential and renewed global ambition.
