The vacation season is upon us, and for travel enthusiasts, there is one more visa-free destination in Asia to explore. After Sri Lanka offered free tourist visas for Indians, Thailand will also remove visa requirements for Indian visitors from next month until May 2024. According to a government official, it’s an effort to attract more tourists as the busy season approaches.
Arrivals from India and Taiwan can stay in Thailand for 30 days, according to spokesman Chai Wacharonke. With over 1.2 million visitors this year, India has been Thailand’s fourth-largest source market for tourism after Malaysia, China, and South Korea. Inbound tourism from India increased as more airlines and hotel chains targeted the sector.
Thailand expects approximately 28 million visitors this year, with the new administration hoping that tourism will balance the country’s persistently dismal exports, which have stifled economic progress.
Thailand eliminated visa restrictions for Chinese tourists in September, the country’s main pre-pandemic tourism sector, accounting for 11 million of the record 39 million visits in 2019. According to the most recent official figures, there were 22 million tourists to Thailand from January to October 29, producing 927.5 billion baht ($25.67 billion).
