The Aditya Birla Group has entered India’s wires and cables market with the launch of Ultravolt, its fourth new business foray in three years, as the conglomerate looks to build on the rapid growth of its recent ventures.
Backed by an investment of ₹1,800 crore, Ultravolt will operate under UltraTech Cement and aims to become one of the top two players in the category within five years. At launch, the company says it will be the second-largest player in the wires segment by capacity.
Speaking at the launch event, Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said the Group had increasingly become a platform for making large new business bets. He pointed to the growth of Birla Opus in paints, Indriya in jewellery retail and Birla Pivot in B2B e-commerce as examples of businesses built from scratch in recent years.

Birla said the wires and cables sector was being shaped by three major trends – urbanisation, electrification and digitisation. India is expected to add more than 100 million homes over the next decade, while growing electricity needs, renewable energy, metro networks, electric vehicles and data centres are expected to increase demand for higher-quality and specialised wiring and cables.
For the Aditya Birla Group, the new business also fits closely with UltraTech’s existing presence in the construction ecosystem. Birla noted that the Group already has deep experience with building materials and the underlying components used in wires and cables, including aluminium and copper.
“One in three homes in India is built using our cement,” he said, pointing to the Group’s existing understanding of the construction value chain and its relationships with dealers, contractors and home builders.
The business will be supported by a manufacturing facility at Jhagadia in Gujarat’s Bharuch district. Ultravolt plans to launch with a portfolio covering home and flexible wires, along with cables for residential, commercial, industrial and infrastructure applications.
Rather than entering the market region by region, the company is planning a national rollout from the beginning. It aims to establish a presence across more than 500 districts and 6,000 pin codes, with plans to eventually reach over one lakh retailers and more than 5,000 UltraTech Building Solutions outlets. More than 20 warehouses are also being developed to support distribution.
Birla said the Group’s strategy would go beyond competing on price, with an emphasis on quality, technology, availability and customer service.
The launch of Ultravolt also reflects a broader shift in the Aditya Birla Group’s growth strategy. After entering paints, jewellery retail and B2B e-commerce in recent years, the conglomerate is now making another large bet on a sector linked to India’s expanding housing, infrastructure and energy needs.
