This year’s International Emmys nominations are out, and it turned out to be a big day for India. Diljit Dosanjh’s portrayal of the folk icon Chamkila has earned him a best performance nomination, while the film itself is competing in the TV Movie/Mini-Series category.
From the streets of India to such a renowned global platform, the spotlight is on Superstar performer Diljit Dosanjh and the team behind Amar Singh Chamkila. This film is Imtiaz Ali’s vision about the life of a fearless singer famously known as Chamkila.
Whoever is aware of the story of the legend, Amar Singh Chamkila knows that his songs and writings were the voice of rebellion in the Punjabi music scene although the late singer and his partner and wife Amarjot Kaur died a tragic death in 1988, in broad daylight.
Their killers were never found and a legend was silenced far too soon.
After decades, Chamkila‘s story is making global headlines again. The nomination of the actor/singer Diljit Dosanjh for a Imtiaz Ali film that is based upon a legendary sensational singer is proof that legends and their efforts can never truly fade, with time they get their due recognition.
For the generation who grew up with Chamkila‘s song and even for the those, who discovered them through the movie for the first time it is such a big moment that any artist who openly spoke about love, desire, poverty, and social tensions, all at the same time who gave a sound to the frustrations and the dreams of ordinary people is making global headlines.
Chamkila‘s music was raw, fearless and deeply thought provoking in itself, which earned him both devoted fans and bitter enemies. His life journey is a reminder that the emotional struggles of an artist’s love, defiance, longing are at their core, human struggles, they deserve understanding and respect before admiration for what they create. They need not to be treated any special but humans first.
The international Amy nominations for both the actor singer Diljit Dosanjh and the movie Amar Singh Chamkila itself is a ground breaking tale of India’s expanding influence in global entertainment. However, this is surprising to many that such a homegrown story, which is rooted in regional culture is getting attention across the globe, which could also be symbolic that the emotional journey of an artist is global, it takes one to feel as one.
Although the winners will be announced later this year at the international Emmy award ceremony, for every Indian national in and across the continent, these nominations are already celebratory.
It is a remarkable new era for the Indian entertainment industry. The world is finally ready to cherish, acknowledge and reward authentic Indian narratives.
