Forbes’ latest ‘India’s 100 Richest List’ is out, and one name that you cannot afford to miss is that of Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil. He is a medical doctor-turned-entrepreneur from Kerala who is ranked number 57 on the Forbes list with a net worth of $3.7 billion (₹30,770 crore).
Born in the lush coastal city of Kozhikode, Kerala, Dr. Shamsheer’s journey to greatness in medicine and business was characterised by his unwavering dedication to healthcare. Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil has seen a stratospheric ascent in his career and is currently in charge of one of the largest and most dynamic healthcare organisations in the UAE.
His journey from a physician to a leader in the establishment of a physician-led medical business is inspiring. He received extra radiology specialty training after completing his medical education at Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, India. After finishing his medical training, he moved to the Middle East, where he worked as a radiologist.
In 2007, Vayalil began with a single hospital in Abu Dhabi. Today, Burjeel has 24 medical facilities and 16 hospitals. Burjeel Holdings, a Middle Eastern chain of hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies, was founded and is led by Vayalil.
The October 2022 listing of Burjeel Holdings increased his net wealth. Before leaving in May 2022, Vayalil served as vice chairman of the investment company Amanat Holdings. He still serves as chairman of the publicly traded provider of medical services, Response Plus Holdings.
His calculated actions have transformed the healthcare industry in the Middle East and propelled him into the exclusive group of the richest billionaires in the world. Dr. Shamsheer is now India’s richest doctor, according to a 68% increase in net worth this year from $2.2 billion (Rs 18,295 crore) in 2022.
According to comparative data, Dr. Shamsheer is also the non-resident Indian on the list with the fastest growth.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Shamsheer remains rooted in his values through philanthropy. He offered a contribution of emergency medical supplies worth Rs. 1.75 crore to aid Kerala in its battle against the deadly Nipah virus in 2018.
Dr. Shamsheer also committed to helping Kerala, which had been devastated by floods, through both short-term and long-term actions, including providing amenities and equipment worth Rs 2 crore for flood relief.
