Two Indian workers were killed and one was abducted in a terror attack at their worksite in Niger on July 15. They were employed by Transrail Lighting Ltd, which is working on a power transmission project in the Dosso region, around 100 km from the capital, Niamey. The deceased have been identified as Ganesh Karmali, 39, from Jharkhand’s Bokaro district, and Krishnan from southern India. A third worker, Ranjit Singh from Jammu & Kashmir, was reportedly abducted during the incident.
The attack took place during a gun battle between terrorists and local security forces. Karmali was killed on the spot, while his brother-in-law, who was also at the site, sustained injuries and is currently under police protection.
The Indian Embassy in Niger confirmed the deaths and said it is coordinating with local authorities and the employer to repatriate the bodies and ensure the safe return of the abducted worker. Families of the victims have been informed.
The government has urged all Indian nationals in Niger to remain alert. The incident underscores the growing security threats faced by Indian workers in certain parts of Africa, where militant activity has been on the rise.
