More than $10 billion in US tariff refunds is set to flow back to Indian exporters after American authorities began implementing procedures to return duties collected under a trade enforcement programme that was later struck down by the courts.
The refunds relate to reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States on imports from countries with large trade surpluses, including India. Indian exporters were hit with a 50% tariff on certain exports after Washington introduced additional trade measures in 2025. The duties were subsequently invalidated by the US Supreme Court earlier this year, paving the way for affected businesses to recover the money paid.
The $10 billion in US tariff refunds set for Indian exporters covers shipments made between August 2025 and February 2026, according to industry estimates. The process had been delayed while US authorities finalised administrative guidelines for processing claims and distributing payments.
The Reserve Bank of India has also issued clarifications aimed at easing the receipt of funds by Indian companies. The guidance addresses banking and remittance procedures, helping exporters receive refunds even in cases where direct US banking relationships may not exist.
Industry sources said some smaller remittances have already begun to move through the system, while larger payouts are expected to be released gradually over the coming months. The refunds could provide a significant financial boost for exporters that faced higher costs and reduced competitiveness during the period when the tariffs were in force.
In cases where duties were paid directly by US importers, the refunds will initially be credited to those entities. Industry participants are expected to determine how the recovered funds are shared, particularly where tariff costs had previously been absorbed jointly by exporters and importers through negotiated pricing arrangements.
The development marks a major step in resolving one of the most significant trade disputes affecting Indian exporters in recent years. With the refund process now underway, businesses across multiple sectors will be closely watching the pace and scale of payouts from US authorities.
